What Is Yoga?

What is Yoga? Yoga means unity. Etymologically, it is related to the English word, yoke. Yoga means connection with God, or, the combination of the little, ego-self with the divine Self, the infinite your Spirit.

History of Yoga

Most people in the Western, and also many in India, little bit confuse yoga with Hatha Yoga, the system of bodily positions. But yoga is originally a spiritual exercise & discipline.

Not that there’s anything wrong with exercising Hatha Yoga. Our body is a part of our human universe and must be kept fit so it doesn’t prevent our spiritual disciplines. However, those who are targeted on self-realization do not essentially have to practice it as so much or at all.

The Hatha Yoga is the physical division of Raja Yoga, the true science of yoga. Raja Yoga is a system of meditation techniques that help to harmonize human self-consciousness with the divine consciousness of God.

Yoga is a craft as well as a science. It is a science, because it provides practical methods for controlling body and mind, thereby making deep meditation to easily possible. And it is an art/craft, for except it is followed intuitively and sensitively it will produce only superficial results.

Yoga is not a system of divination. It takes into statement the influence on each other of body and mind and brings them into a common harmony. So often, for example, the mind cannot think simply because of tension or illness in the body, which prevents the energy from passing to the brain. So often, too, the strength in the body is weakened because the will is dispirited, or paralyzed by bad emotions.

Origin of Yoga

Yoga works originally with the energy in the body, through the science of pranayama, or pressure-control. Prana intends also ‘breath.’ Yoga shows how, through breath-control, to still the mind and accomplish higher states of awareness.

The higher instructions of yoga take one beyond techniques and show the yogi, or yoga practitioner, how to direct his energy in such a way as not only to harmonize human with divine consciousness but to consolidate his consciousness in the Infinite.

The ordinary person’s energy is secured in his body. The loss of availability of that energy to his will blocks him from loving the Lord one-pointedly with any of the three other viewpoints of his nature: heart, mind, or soul. Only when the energy can be withdrawn from the body and directed upward in deep meditation is true inner communication possible.

Summary

Yoga is a very old science; it is thousands of years old. The observations derived from its practice form the chine of the greatness of India, which for centuries has been invented. The truths supported in the yoga teachings, however, are not limited to India, nor to those who consciously practice yoga techniques. Many angels of other religions also, including many Christian saints, have discovered aspects of the spiritual path that are essential to the teachings of yoga.
